Honing Your Craft: Writing that Sizzles

  • Trader Duke's Hotel 1117 Williston Road South Burlington, VT United States (map)

The League of Vermont Writers' winter program, "Honing your Craft: Writing that Sizzles," will feature talks and workshops by two well-published Vermont authors: Julia Shipley and Sean Prentiss.

Julia Shipley will discuss how to make writing, whether it's a poem, essay or story, more impactful by asking "But why?" She will explore how writers can improve their writing by asking that question to determine what's smoldering at the core of their work, using examples from her own writing journey as well as those of others.

Sean Prentiss will build on the concepts presented by Shipley as he examines perceptions and misperceptions of time. In his talk, "Bengal Tiger Moments: Perception of Time on the Page," he will explain how writers can use tools, such as the five speeds of scene and three incident frequencies, to make words align with how time might move in the real world.

Both speakers will lead workshops to help writers apply these ideas to their own work. Participants are asked to bring a favorite story, poem or book by a writer they admire as well as a piece of their own creative writing. The agenda also includes the League's annual business meeting.

The program is open to writers of all abilities.

Cost: $46 for League members; $56 for non-members. Includes morning refreshments and lunch.
