This is the sixth in our series of 2017 Vermont Book Award finalists' summer reading lists.
Welcome to another installment of our summer reading list series. Today we are sharing book suggestions from Melanie Finn. Melanie's most recent book, The Gloaming, published by Two Dollar Radio in 2016, was praised in The New York Times as a book that "deserves major attention."
Thank you for sharing your list, Melanie!
Melanie Finn's Summer Reading List
As I'm finishing a rewrite of my new book, I'm extra careful to avoid books that might influence me in some sub-conscious way. So I tend to non-fiction, detective fiction and classics.
I was perusing our fabulous local used bookstore, Green Mountain Books, and found Thomas Wolfe's Look Homeward, Angel. Somehow, I'm ashamed to admit, I've never read it.
From my own bookshelf, I've taken out Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried. I taught it in an American Lit class at our local high school. It's a brilliant piece of writing, savage and honest, and I love how he plays with the idea of fact and truth as often opposing forces. Reading it with 16-year-olds was a powerful way to open their minds to the consequences of war.
